The Unknown Brewing Company’s Venture American Stout certainly pushes the boundaries of the standard stout beer. I received this gem via a beer swap and was very interested to give it a try. I’ve had quite a few brews for Unknown, and they are always producing quality, innovative takes on beer.

This stout was no different. It poured a dark black, opaque color with a tan frothy head. Just the faintest shade of deep, dark red could be seen at the very bottom of the glass-other than that…straight black.
The aromas on the nose were excellent. There was definitely a lot going on and in a good way. I detected notes of dark chocolate, coffee, licorice, roasted malt, and even a dirt and earthy smell. The taste provided similar intricacies—there were notes of coffee, dark chocolate, roasted—and I would even say charred—malt. In addition, a charred bitterness carried itself throughout the taste as well. This was unwelcome at first but I found that it soon complimented the taste of the beer. Finally, the beer finished bitter and dry, a credit to the stout and West Coast hops used in the brew. All in all, a solid beer that provided an interesting take on the standard stout. Cheers! #BeerReview #Stout
